Our Favorite Haunts in Wooster

Do you believe in ghosts? If you do, you’re not alone. Nearly 40% of Americans surveyed believe in ghosts, while another 20% are unsure. Whether you’re a believer or a skeptic, if you’re looking to get into the spooky season spirit, take some time to visit some of our favorite haunts in town.

Freedlander Theatre

According to legend, The College of Wooster’s Freedlander Theatre–the host of campus productions and home to the Ohio Light Opera–is haunted by the ghost of Effie Shoolroy. Effie, a supporter of the local arts, was married to Ross Kready Shoolroy, a College trustee. In honor of Effie’s love of the arts, Ross donated money to the College to establish the Effie Shoolroy Theatre, located within Freedlander. Effie died in December of 1974, three months before Freedlander Theatre’s dedication in March of 1975.

Strange activities reported in Freedlander Theatre include lights being turned on in empty rooms, doors being slammed, and strange rattling noises. Those who have encountered Effie agree that while her actions may be surprising and even unsettling, she is ultimately a benevolent ghost. Effie tends to become more active in the lead up to productions, so if you’re hoping to encounter a friendly ghost, you may as well catch a show while you’re there! The Olde Jaol Tavern and Steakhouse

Many also believe the Olde Jaol Tavern and Steakhouse , which occupies the Third Jaol of Wayne County, built in 1865, is haunted by the ghost of John Callahan, the only person ever executed in Wayne County. Callahan, aged 22 at the time of his execution in December of 1880, was convicted of killing John Tormie during a brawl at the Wayne County Fair in 1879. Callahan served time prior to his execution in a basement cell in the Third Jaol, and his public execution occurred in the courtyard in front of the building.

Those who have experienced paranormal activities at the Olde Jaol report strange phone calls, the sound of banging on steel bars, and flickering lights, all of which tend to occur in the early morning or late evening hours. You can visit the Third Jaol–and have a delicious meal–by making reservations at the Olde Jaol Tavern and Steakhouse.

While we can’t guarantee that visiting either Freedlander Theatre or The Olde Jaol will result in a paranormal experience, we can guarantee that you’ll have a wonderful time experiencing two of Wooster’s most iconic locations. Whether you’re taking in a College play or dance concert or an OLO show, Freedlander Theatre is an intimate venue that puts on world-class productions, and the Olde Jaol provides an opportunity to eat gourmet food in a unique historical setting. If your dog loves going through the drive-thru for a pup cone, consider making your own frozen dog treats–your dog will love them, and you’ll feel great knowing that the ingredients are nutritious. If you don’t have a dog, you can still celebrate the dog days of summer. Volunteering at Wayne County Humane Society is a fantastic way to get involved in the community and do some good for our furry friends. The Humane Society is always looking for volunteers. Even if dogs aren’t your thing, there are opportunities to support the organization through fundraising as well as clerical and maintenance work. And if you love animals, volunteering to do animal care is always a fulfilling experience. Who knows–you could get lucky and meet your new best friend!

It can be tempting to spend the dog days of summer basking in the breeze of your air conditioner, but spending quality time with your pup and making new memories together is more rewarding. Grab some peanuts and Cracker Jacks–it’s baseball season! The next time you and your buddies are watching a Guardians game at Muddy's or The Olde Jaol Tavern, blow their minds with some local baseball trivia. While it’s been a while since a Wooster resident has been to the majors, Wooster is the birthplace of four MLB players, including a Cy Young winner!

Ginger Clark

A “one-game wonder,” pitcher Harvey Daniel “Ginger” Clark, born in Wooster in 1879, had the shortest career of the players on our list. He played a single game for the Cleveland Bronchos, on August 11, 1902, and earned a win by pitching the final six innings against the Baltimore Orioles. He went on to spend nine years in the minor leagues.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Born in Wooster in 1874, Irvin "Kaiser" Wilhelm graduated from Wooster High School and attended The College of Wooster. His MLB pitching career began with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1903. He spent the following two seasons with the Boston Beaneaters, then was sent down to the minors. He returned to the majors with the Brooklyn Superbas from 1908-1910. After another stint in the minors, Wilhelm was signed to the Federal League Baltimore Terrapins, before returning to the majors with the Philadelphia Phillies for the 1921 season as a manager. Not one to enjoy the sidelines, he took to the mound a few times that season as well.

Though he often struggled in the majors–in 1904 and 1905, he led the league in earned runs–Wilhelm shone as a minor league player. Despite many contemporary sources recognizing Brad Thompson’s 57 consecutive scoreless innings as a minor league pitching record, this is because several of Wilhelm’s scoreless innings in 1907 had been overlooked . In the 1907 season alone, Wilhelm pitched 59 scoreless innings. Further, he was called up to the majors before giving up a run, so when he returned to the minors in 1911, his streak was ongoing. He pitched a further 13 scoreless innings, extending his own record .

Roger Peckinpaugh

Born in Wooster in 1891, Roger Peckingpaugh had a long MLB career as a shortstop for several teams, and, later, as a manager for Cleveland. He made his MLB debut with the Cleveland Naps in September of 1910, before being sent to the minors for the 1911 season. He was back with the Naps in the 1912 and 1913 seasons, after which he was traded to the Yankees, with whom he played for the next eight seasons. In his first season with the Yankees, he was named team captain, and for the last three weeks of the season, he served in a dual role as player-manager. In 1921, his final season with the Yankees, they went to the World Series, ultimately losing to the New York Giants. He was traded twice before the 1922 season, ultimately ending up with the Washington Senators. He went to the World Series twice more with the Senators, winning against the New York Giants in 1924 and losing to the Pittsburgh Pirates the following year. He was named AL MVP in 1925. After the 1926 season, he was traded to the Chicago White Sox, where he played his final season. He served as Cleveland’s manager from 1928-1933, and returned for the 1941 season before working in the franchise’s front office.

Dean Chance

Dean Chance , a Cy Young Award-winning right-handed pitcher, was born in Wooster in 1941. He grew up on his family’s dairy farm and attended Northwestern High School, where he played baseball and was an all-state basketball player. He made a late-season MLB debut with the Los Angeles Angels in 1961, for whom he played until 1966. In 1964, with the Angels, he became the then-youngest person to win the Cy Young Award at age 23. Of his pitching that year, Mickey Mantle stated , “Every time I see his name on a lineup card, I feel like throwing up.” Following his time in Los Angeles, Chance was traded to the Minnesota Twins. After the 1969 season, he was traded to Cleveland in 1970, then to the New York Mets later in the season. He finished his career in 1971 as a member of the Detroit Tigers bullpen. He retired with a 2.92 ERA.

A girls' night out is a great opportunity to catch up with your besties, let your hair down, and have some much-needed fun. Ten Weeks of Tasty, 2023

Have you ever heard of the magic contained in the number ten? In terms of aging, it is the first birthday that is in double digits. A camera can be put on a ten second timer. Counting to ten is a crucial part of an early learning experience. Our fiscal system made the dime’s value equal to ten cents.

Historically speaking, I’m not certain if the number ten had any special significance, but at Main Street Wooster, it is our magic number from the months of February to April.

Ten is our favorite because it is the number of weeks that we host one of our longest events, Ten Weeks of Tasty.

During these next several weeks, we will be highlighting a drink shop, and a restaurant each week up until April 28th. Each Thursday of the week will be dedicated to a restaurant, while each Friday will host a specialty beverage.

If math isn’t your strong suit, then just continue reading. The number of weeks means that we will be highlighting a total of twenty local businesses. This list consists of Bay Lobsters Café and Fish Market, Boba Bowl, Broken Rocks, Grigio, Buehler’s Towne Market Café, JAFB Wooster Brewery, The City Square Steakhouse, Lincoln Way Vineyards, The Curry Pot, Meatheads, Muddy’s, The Leaf, Omahoma Bob’s Barbeque, Minglewood Distilling Co., Spoon Market & Deli, Sure House Coffee Roasting Co., TJ’s, Undergrounds Café & Coffeehouse, “Your” Pizza Shop, and Wooster Nutrition.

So far, some of these sales have consisted of Bay Lobsters Café and Fish Market having a fish-and-chips sale, and Boba Bowl offering one free topping with the purchase of a bubble tea.

For those of you who like a good surprise, you can wait to check Main Street Wooster’s social media pages each week to see who will be hosting the tasty dates. However, if you’d like to know which day each business has, then there is a schedule on Main Street’s website on the Ten Weeks of Tasty page.

On this page, there is also a passport that will double as your calendar. This piece of paper shows each participating business, their spotlight date, and their location. Our multitasking passport can earn you some cool goodies for supporting our local businesses.

For simply buying something on the day that a business has their tasty date, you will receive a mark on your passport. All it takes are five marks on your passport to be entered into a drawing for 100 downtown dollars!

Drawing or no drawing, the Ten Weeks of Tasty is a great way to get out of the house and celebrate some local businesses. Whether you achieve a lucky number ten, twenty, five, or whatever other number, we’ll still be happy to see you downtown getting a taste (pun intended) of our downtown!

The Wooster Entertainment Scene

Wooster is a small city with a big heart and a thriving arts and culture scene. Downtown Wooster is a vibrant and lively community, offering a variety of entertainment options for residents and visitors alike.

Free to the public, Main Street Music showcases live local bands in the Pavilion of Public Square on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from mid-May through mid-October.

Live music also plays during our Saturday morning Farmers Market in Public Square. Rain or shine, you can find the best local produce and artisan crafter from 8 am - noon, 5/13/23 - 10/14/23.

One of the top entertainment options in downtown Wooster is the Wayne Center for the Arts . This nonprofit organization offers a range of art exhibits, classes, and workshops for all ages. The center also hosts a number of concerts and performances throughout the year, featuring local and national artists.

For those interested in live theater, Wooster has a number of options to choose from. The Ohio Light Opera is a popular choice, offering a summer season of operettas and musicals. Summer Stage Wooster is another option, producing a new musical each year. The College of Wooster's Wooster Symphony Orchestra , founded in 1915, performs four concerts each year with a range of historical and contemporary music.

Several times a year, Wooster hosts downtown festivals, including WoosterFest, Window Wonderland, and Kids Day. I think most midwestern families would say that December is their busiest month of the year. Between office parties, family events, and the seventeen grocery store trips from forgetting the one thing you need, the month takes a toll. Once New Years is over, almost everyone is ready for a yearlong nap.

But by the time that February rolls around, the day to day starts to even out. The holiday stress has worn off, and hopefully you’ve eaten all your leftovers. (Seriously, if you still have ham in the fridge, it’s time to throw it out.) And since we’ve thrown out the old, we must invite the new into our lives.

New shopping that is.

Just past Valentine’s Day is Main Street Wooster’s first big event of the year, the Winter Shop Hop. This year, the event will be taking place on Saturday, February 18th, and we’re hoping you can spare us a bit of your time for some cozy deals.

If you’re not familiar with the friendly competitive spirit that rests in our downtown, then allow me to explain. While Wooster is known for a great many things, our creative contests are one of the more popular facets of the town.

During the Winter Shop Hop, you’ll want to keep an eye out for some adorable looking penguins. These penguins can come in many shapes and sizes, including wall art, plushies, or anything that can be thought up. Each of them will have a qr code next to them that will enable you to vote for your favorite. The ten stores participating are Nest, Friendtique, Boba Bowl, JK Gift Shop, Roomscapes, E&H Hardware, Flex Yoga, Artfind Tile, Apple Creek Bank, and Catholic Charities of Wayne County. You will only be able to vote up until 5pm on the 18th, so we encourage you to use your vote wisely, and may the best penguin win!

If you don’t find penguins to be adorable, then we must ask, who hurt you? But in complete honesty, we do have more things to entice you with.

Here at Main Street Wooster, we love to play a challenging game of bingo. Fortunately for the residents of Wooster, this will be the easiest game of bingo ever played.

All it takes to earn your bingo is to buy something from four or five shops. We have twenty-five shops to choose from, so the hardest part of winning will be picking which five you’d like to purchase something from. We have one free space if you’re having an awfully hard time deciding, but all twenty-five shops are ready to mark down your card if you’re ready to play. This bingo card can be printed off Main Street Wooster’s website, so that you can establish an attack plan before you go.

We know we have some overachievers in our lovely town, so we want to make sure you know that you can make more than one bingo if you’d like, but it must be a different row.

For each bingo that you make, you will be entered into a drawing for two downtown dollar gift cards. Our two winners will each be receiving a gift card worth 100 dollars!

If you’d like to be entered into a drawing that rewards you for supporting small businesses, we must warn you that we need them by February 20th. Any cards delivered after that time will have to go in the trash with the moldy leftovers.

Churches are some of the most incredible buildings in history. They mark that a group of people lived and grew in an area, not just as individuals but also as a community.

Something is also to be said about the grand ways in which churches are constructed. The architecture of many churches is still a sight to behold, even years in the future.

Churches, or even remnants of churches, show us how people of the times lived and how their daily lives worked. They show a place that was constructed for people to come together in, but also a place with beautiful high arches, and heavenly decor.

In our own downtown Wooster, we have many churches dating back to the early ages of our own community. Each of the churches were constructed in a way that fits with the time period that they were made in, and now gives the viewer a unique perspective into what life was like at that time.

All the churches in Wooster possess their own unique traits. The architecture alone is something to gawk at. With each church's pointed tops, tall front doors, and delicate stained-glass windows, they all showcase art in some way.

The perfect way to see all these things, and to get some free goodies, is by attending the free historic church tour.

The church walk might be more of an independent process then what you might think. A bus serves as your transportation for which stops, you’d like to take, but with surprising flexibility. It will continue in a loop for the three hours of the evening, stopping at each one, but you get to decide which stops you want to take. People are also welcomed to walk to visit the churches in any sequence they like.

The church stops are St. James Episcopal Church, Wooster United Methodist Church, First Baptist Church, Zion Lutheran Church, Central Christian Church, First Presbyterian Church, St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, and People to People Ministries (where they are planning to have a food truck!).

During this tour there will be organ music of carols, refreshments, a food truck, tours of the church, and presentations of the history that took place there.

The tour will be stopping at each church, then stopping back at the library after it has finished each loop and will continue to loop around the churches for the evening.

The tour starts at 5 pm on December 2nd and runs till 8 pm. This tour will be primarily run by a free shuttle that will be loading and unloading at the Wayne County Public Library, 220 West Liberty Street, for the course of the evening. Free parking is also available at the library.

Perhaps not all who attend this tour are history buffs, but maybe you’re simply there to take in the artistry and creativity that went into these grand buildings. Maybe you’re just chugging along and hoping to warm up with some hot chocolate along the way. The twinkling lights dazzle as the yearly countdown begins. The crowd anxiously waits for the speakers to blare the words, “Light it up!” At last, the children’s tree switch is flipped, and the glow of dozens of lights illuminate our downtown square in a red, green, and white hue. Santa prepares himself for his descent from the Briggs building, and children patiently (or not so patiently) wait to tell him of all their Christmas wishes. You can hear the shuffle of the crowds moving in and out of stores, sweet beverages in hand that release a pleasant steam into the crisp chill air.

This tale is as old as time for anyone who has attended Window Wonderland in previous years. Each holiday season it attracts some of the biggest crowds that downtown Wooster has seen all year, and it is very easy to see why.

With our picturesque displays of windows, and the festive atmosphere to match, you will find yourself being swept into your very own holiday movie.

Our reindeer, who will be hooving it up all night on the downtown streets, can attest to the fun you’ll have. But if you won’t take it from the reindeer, then the horses pulling the carriages will tell you the same thing. Even if carriage rides aren’t your cup of hot chocolate, then there will also be toy train rides for the locomotive fans.

In order to keep your spirits high, Summer Stage Wooster will be providing a musical performance at 7 p.m. A helpful group of elves, that resemble the College of Wooster cheerleaders, will also be taking part in this performance.

Once you can feel the holiday spirit (or a sugar high) pulsing through your veins, the big man himself will be making his appearance. Santa will be escorted off the building by the Wooster Fire Department, and once he has had some milk and cookies to recover from his long journey, he will be ready for his glamor shots in the pavilion. Mrs. Claus made the trip here with him, but she decided that she would be meeting children in the magical shop that is Friendtique.

When Santa and Mrs. Claus decided to come and visit, they also asked if a few of their friends wanted to stay behind for a while. Their elves happily agreed, and we hope you’ll have as much fun finding them as they did while hiding.

Forty-five businesses will be participating in the third annual Elf Scavenger Hunt, and we challenge you to find all forty-five of them. Each elf will be hidden somewhere in the participating stores, and it’s up to the city of Wooster to find them.

By printing off your elf passport, or picking one up from Main Street Wooster, you can mark off each elf as you start to find them, starting on November 18th. The elves will stay hidden until December 26th, but all passports must be completed and taken to the Main Street Wooster by 4 p.m. on December 28th.

If you manage to complete these tasks during your whirlwind of festivities, you will be entered in a raffle to win fifty downtown dollars. We will randomly select five winners from the drawing, who will each win their downtown dollars and some fabulous prizes!

While we couldn’t quite figure bring the north pole here, we did figure out how to bring a piece of the spirit into downtown.

Thirty-three downtown businesses will be offering cookies, eggnog, goodie bags, donuts, crafts, and so much more! Some businesses decided to host sales for the evening, and some decided to add some new holiday items to their menus, but no matter what you take part in, you’re also taking part in the community spirit that exists in our downtown.

However, with community, competition often follows, and Window Wonderland is no exception. Each year we host a friendly competition of window decorating including winning titles such as, best use of product, best seasonal theme, most beautiful, most original, and people’s choice. As we’ve said before, community and competition go hand in hand, so Wooster residents will be able to vote on their favorite window display up until the next day. The winner will be announced in the Daily Record, so make sure to use your vote wisely.

This kick off holiday cheer will be commencing downtown, at 3 p.m. on November 18th, and extending all of the way into the wee hour of 9 p.m. During those six hours, there will be plenty of music, food, and festivities that will send you home with a bit of pep in your now magical step.

A crisp chill is in the air, the pumpkins are carved and can be seen everywhere. Baskets of treats can be found, and a pleasant creep will be held downtown. At last, the most wonderful thing of them all, on October 22nd Wooster celebrates fall.

The Fall Shop Hop is to take place next Saturday, and we would be delighted for all the ghouls, ghosts, and spirits of Wooster to be in attendance. Of course, we wouldn’t want to invite all the creatures of the night into downtown without giving them something to look forward to.

This year the Fall Shop Hop will be having a spooktacular competition of scarecrows, with each decorated as a particular musical artist. There are eleven businesses total participating which includes, downtown Buehler’s, Kitschy Koo Boutique, NEST, Friendtique, Boba Bowl, JK Gift Shop, Embellish Tattoo Company, Cookie Snob Cookies, Omahoma Bob’s Barbeque, Flex Yoga, and Artfind Title. Each participating business got to pick which famous musician they chose, but it is up to the werewolves, vampires, and monsters of Wooster to pick the best one.

The scarecrows were revealed on October 7th, and voting will continue up until October 22nd at 5 p.m. Each business has a QR code next to their musician which enables you to pick your favorite one. The crowned scarecrow will be revealed during the entertainment of the night, which will be Eternally Elvis! Elvis will be performing once the voting ends, and will be continuing till 7 p.m.

Along with this musically chilling competition, there will be some equally as thrilling deals. Boba Bowl will have ten percent off all drinks. Motts Oils & More will have a free pour spout with every thirty dollars spent. Omahoma Bob’s will be offering ten percent off on beef jerky and beef sticks. JK Gift shop will be offering refreshments, free of charge. Friendtique and NEST will be having a thirty percent off sale throughout the entire store (minus the display case). Buehler’s will be giving away free pumpkin cookies. Flex yoga will have a forty-five percent discount on all yoga mats and will be open till 12:30 p.m. MacKenzie’s Silver lining will be taking ten percent off on the entire store and will be open till 3:00 p.m. Uptown Downtown Antiques will be having a ten percent off sale. Jodi’s Closet has a twenty percent discount on all items for the day. E&H Ace Hardware’s solar lights will be twenty-five percent off. Roomscapes will be celebrating their 20th anniversary and will be offering a small gift and coupons. Kitschy Coo Boutique will be having a twenty percent off sale. And, unless you’re starring in the next slasher film, then Graham and Burns will be having fifteen percent off kitchen knives and cutlery.

With a scarecrow competition as alarmingly stylish as this one, and some blood curling great deal, we sincerely hope you, and possibly the rest of your pumpkin patch are in attendance. While we cannot promise that you’ll be swept away onto your own magic broomstick, we can provide you with a wonderful fall evening.

Managing college can be so stressful at times. As students you’re expected to keep up with course work, maintain a social life, and somehow manage to sleep enough to get you through the day. Depending on your life, you also might have a sport, or a job, or possibly both, all of which eat up a lot of your time. For a lot of college students, it can feel easy to knock out one of these things in favor of having more time for one of the others. While we can’t do anything about anyone’s night owl tendencies or busy schedules, we do have quite a few suggestions on ways to have fun, and not break the bank.

If you are looking to get off campus, and you’re an early riser, then we would recommend the farmer’s market! The market is completely free to get into, and it runs from 8 am to noon every Saturday. The market is especially enjoyable when the artisan market also comes to the square. The artisan market is when a second set of businesses come to sell things like paintings, pottery, handmade bags, and sometimes jewelry. The artisan market occurs on every second Saturday of the month! Unfortunately, the last day that both markets take place is October 8th, so you will have to come check it out before the end of the warm season.

Of course, since you would already be downtown after the market, it would be rude of us to not give you any food recommendations. Boba Bowl is the number 1 place for boba in Wooster, and we aren’t saying that just because they’re our only one. The Boba Bowl is number one in our hearts because they make delicious drinks, and they offer a ten percent discount with a valid student id!

Luckily, they aren’t the only ones that have discounts for college students. Omahoma Bob’s Barbeque has fifteen percent off, Sure House Coffee offers a drink reward system, Undergrounds Coffee has fifteen percent off, Spoon Market and Deli offers a ten percent discount, and Wooster Nutrition will take two dollars off your order.

Granted, we cannot always predict what draws people downtown. It could be our amazing food, or our music, or our unique small-town shops. But you could also be on a mission to find a gift, and if that is true for you, then we still have you covered. Whether it is for a roommate that you upset, or your mom that is missing you more than she cares to admit, we have a shop for everyone.

Like our restaurants, our shops understand that college pays off in the long run, but the budget can be tight while you are in school. A large amount of our shops offers a ten percent discount with proof of a student ID, which includes, Graham and Burns, Son Apothecary, Motts Oils and More, Blackbird Records, Operation Fandom, JK Gift Shop, and Lynch’s Irish Imports.

Papers and exams can be very taxing on your nervous system, so if you feel like you need to ‘stretch’ out the stress, then Flex Yoga is offering discounted student memberships and drop ins, just for people like you. However, different people use different ways to de-stress, and if crystals and salt have that effect on you, then you may want to try The Salt and Serenity Grotto at a fifteen percent discount! Additionally, Friendtique and Nest have twenty percent off every Saturday, and at Roomscapes you get one free card with the purchase of a greeting card.

For the night owls, we have one more event for you. On every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night Main Street Music hosts an artist each night on the square! The acts can range from folk and country songs, to pop, and rock, and change each night. Like the Farmer’s Market, it only runs till October 8th, but there will certainly be some great acts before the music is capped for the year.

It can be tough to make time to socialize in school, and it can be even harder to make time for yourself, but even if it's an hour that you spend by yourself looking at fresh fruits and honey, it can be a big help in school. Maybe that self-care can also look like roaming the downtown streets with your favorite drink in your hand and your friends by your side. It does not matter what way you choose to use as self-care, but as the community of Wooster we hope our downtown is a part of the reason you can stay sane this school year.

The majority of the time it can be very easy to get stuck in our usual everyday routines. We tend to pick the same set of restaurants to go to, and we all have our ‘go to order’ from our favorite places. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with this, it is good to occasionally step outside of our comfort zones by trying something new.

This kind of adventure is exactly what the Taste of Downtown is made for; and with seventeen businesses participating, you will certainly have a chance to test your palate.

The Taste of Downtown is run similar to a carnival game, (except there is no trick of the eye involved) each beverage or food can be purchased with tickets at the participating businesses from 5 p.m. till 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 21st. These tickets can be bought in advance until July 18th at 5 p.m. The tickets are sold at Farmer’s National Bank, and City Square Steakhouse, but these tickets can also be purchased at either Buehler’s in Wooster starting on July 7th. If you pre order your tickets, then you can purchase 6 tickets for five dollars, but you can purchase a ticket per dollar on the day of the event.

Whether you are wanting to try a new coffee, entrée, or alcoholic beverage, the Taste of Downtown has something for everyone.

If you are wanting to venture into the realm of drinks that warm you up, but you have no idea what your preference in alcoholic drinks are, then this will be the perfect night to find out. Grigio Wine and Cocktail Barn have two sample drink options for five tickets, or six tickets. Lincoln Way Vineyard and Troutman Vineyards and Winery are both offering samples of drinks for a single ticket, and five tickets for a glass. Blue Barn Winery, Minglewood Distilling Co, and JAFB will also be selling alcoholic drinks for 3 to 5 tickets.

The ‘mild’ caffeine addicts, and those that are new to the community, will have plenty of opportunities as well. Sure House Coffee Co will have mini coffees and mini cretzels for 2 tickets each. Undergrounds Café and Coffee House is selling medium iced coffees for 4 tickets, and other bakery treats for three tickets.

But for the people who are on the opposing team of the coffee addicts, our tea businesses will be participating in the event as well. Boba Bowl will have bubble teas or crumbites for a single ticket each, and Wooster Nutrition is selling three different mega teas for four tickets each.

Of course, it is never good to start a great evening while hangry. But luckily, that will not be a concern for the Taste of Downtown. Each restaurant has a few options to pick from that can each be purchased with 1 to 6 tickets. Quite a few fan favorites are priced at 4 tickets, Omahoma Bob’s Barbeque will have two baby back ribs, The Leaf Restaurant will have fried green tomato BLT sliders, The City Square Steakhouse will have pork belly bites, and Broken Rocks Café and Bakery will have peach shortcake. Additionally, Meathead Union of Ohio will have a meatball for 1 ticket, and the Cookie Snob will also have 1 ticket per mini sugar cookie.

Even if none of this fits your taste, Main Street Wooster has a full list of beverages and other fun foods that will be included in the evening. With so many businesses participating, you will be certain to find something that will be your new ‘go to’. No matter what you are in the mood to try, it is certain to be a fun filled evening with new things, friends, and good food.

Kids' Day!

Face painting, giveaways, music, and snow cones: what do all four of these things have in common? They will all be activities featured at this year's Kid’s Day!

Kid’s Day is back, and will be just as fun as ever. This year it will be taking place in the Wayne County Public Library parking lot, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 4th.

The parking lot will be hosting forty-eight vendors total. Each vendor will have some form of a small game or a craft, but sixteen businesses will be featuring an additional activity as well.

The Salvation army and Keller Williams will both be providing snacks in the form of making snow cones, and popping popcorn. Ballet Wooster and the Wayne Center for the Arts will be certain to bring out the inner dancer in kids of all ages (including kids at heart). For the flexible kids, Flex Yoga will also be hosting a kids yoga session, and for the musical kids, Imagine the Possibilities Music Therapy will be having a music making session.

There will also be a couple of different animals for kids to interact with. Complete Chiropractic will have a petting zoo of all kinds of animals, Caring Therapy Canines will have dogs to pet, and Sharon Guilliams State Farm will have horses.

However, there are also quite a few miscellaneous, but equally as fun events from our other vendors. Kiwanis will be hosting a book giveaway, and People to People will have some coloring activities. WaCPAC will be having an Aladdin cast meet and greet. The Wooster Police Department will have a photo booth set up, the Red Cross will have a “pack a first aid kit” event, and the Wooster Fire Department will have their trucks on display for kids to investigate.

Of course, the main focus on Kid’s Day is about the kids, which also makes it the perfect event to announce the winners of the All American Kid Award. The All American Kid Award exists to honor the children who show exceptional attributes in specific categories. The kids are nominated by our local teachers, and twenty of them receive the award. Mayor Breneman will present each All American Kid with a certificate, a pin, and a $25 gift card! These kids are all very deserving of the recognition.

To add to the celebration, Main Street Wooster is providing free attractions including face painting, a DJ, and even Samurai Balloon Guy as a balloon animal artist!

Whether or not a kid has been picked for an award, Kid’s Day is meant to be a day of fun in the sun for the younger ones. It is a day that our community of businesses, and parents all come together to create at least one day of excitement for the future adults of the community, and that alone is something that is worth celebrating.

The significance of a good mother impacts each child in this world. The way that maternal figure looks can vary, and the role is not always played by a traditional candidate, but each is deserving of the same recognition. Yet, a mother’s job does not fade even as children turn into adults, it just evolves. They are still there to give wise advice on a late night, to be a shoulder to cry on, and to help when their kids feel a little bit stuck. A mother can give so much love, that we created a day to celebrate them.

This year, that day is on Sunday, May 8th, which may seem like it has snuck up quicker than usual. But if this friendly reminder has sent you into a whirlwind of panic from a lack of gift ideas, then you do not need to fear any longer. Our Wooster shops have long been prepared for the holiday and have quite the collection of gifts for you to choose from, with plenty of time to spare.

Most of our downtown shops will not be open on the day of, but gift cards are always a popular option. If your mom would appreciate a fresh haircut, or a new color entirely then a gift card to one of our local salons could be the perfect gift. Salon Fringe or Addison Scott Hair Company are great salons that specialize in a specific type of hair treatment. Salon Fringe focuses on curly hair, whereas Addison Scott Hair Company is known for its hair extensions. Another option would be the House of Hair, which just about entails any hair related treatment you might think of.

Some of our salons double as both a spa and a salon, including businesses like Clow9 Hair Studio, Cutters Hair Studio and Spa, and Rhimix Salon and Spa. The Salt and Serenity Grotto is also a spa, and doubles as a detox, with online gift cards available.

If you think your mom would prefer something sweet, then the Cookie Snob might be something that will pique your interest. They already have an online option to purchase a batch of a dozen cookies for Mother’s Day, which will be made fresh, and can be delivered, or picked up (with at least a 72-hour notice).

Of course, flowers are also a great way to show your appreciation in a colorful way. Wooster Floral and Gifts, and Com-Patt-Ibles Flowers and Gifts are both amazing local florists, who both already have a selection of Mother’s Day flowers to make picking your bouquet easier. Depending on the time that you submitted your order, they also offer same day delivery.

Wooster also has a large repertoire of shops where you can pick up small gifts or gift cards to certain stores based on your mom’s preferences. Books In Stock is the perfect fit for any mothers who are bookworms. Blue Spruce Boutique is a good pick for those looking for new decorations, or items like candles, and cooking supplies, and Black Bird Records is a fantastic choice for the vintage music lovers.

Mother’s Day is an amazing opportunity to celebrate our mother’s and let them know how much we care and appreciate them. No matter what you decide to give your mom this Mother’s Day, they are sure to love whatever it is, knowing that you took the time to think of them while shopping.

This year, Main Street Wooster is once again hosting Ten Weeks of Tasty. Last year, the event was centered around Wooster’s local food restaurants. The spotlight this year will still be on downtown restaurants but will also include specialty beverage places.

As stated in the name, the event will run for ten weeks, and will be taking place from February 24th till April 29th. Each week of the event, Main Street Wooster will be highlighting one beverage and one food business. Each Thursday, a food business will be the focus, and each Friday it will be centered around a drink business. Each shop that participates will have a discount or specialty item that will be available during their tasty date.

The participating food businesses are BayLobsters Café & Fish Market, Broken Rocks, Buehler’s Towne Market Cafe, City Square Steakhouse, Local Roots, Omaha Bob’s Barbeque, Salsaroja, Spoon Market, The Leaf, and Your Pizza Shop.

The beverage shops that are participating are, Boba Bowl, Bowman Beverage, Dino’s Drive Thru, JAFB Brewery, Meathead’s Union, Minglewood Distilling Co, Sure House Coffee, Tulipan, Undergrounds Cafe, and Wooster Nutrition.

Each week the two new businesses will spin their own take on the Ten Weeks of Tasty, and while the ten weeks are far from over, the businesses who have already participated have offered some great specials, and deals. On Thursday February 24th, BayLobsters Café & Fish Market had Fish-n-Chips with beer battered fries, hushpuppies, and coleslaw for 9.99$ (which was three dollars cheaper). Boba Bowl gave out free handmade mochi with the purchase of any bubble tea.

The second business highlighted in March, Bowman Beverage, had a sale of two dozen packs of Pepsi for nine dollars. Broken Rocks offered a three-course meal for $22. Buehler’s Towne Market Cafe sold classic Reubens and French fries for $7.77, and Dino’s Drive Thru is also offering two packs of a dozen Pepsi for nine dollars.

The Ten Weeks of Tasty also creates the possibility for winning 100 downtown dollars. Twenty businesses, in total, are participating in the event, but you only need to make a purchase from at least five to be entered in the drawing. On Main Street Wooster’s website, on the Ten Weeks of Tasty page (located under the events tab), is the link to the passport. For each business that you shop at during their highlighted day, have an employee of the business mark your passport. Once you have five or more businesses marked on your card, and your passport is turned into Main Street Wooster, your name is put into the drawing. All passports must be turned in by May 2nd, 2022, to be eligible for the prize.

Winter Shop Hop

The Winter Shop Hop of downtown Wooster is this coming weekend! It is a winter-based event for businesses to be able to showcase their products, but in a way that also benefits their customers. Not only will certain businesses be offering discounts for this event, but there is also a possibility for an additional prize, just for shopping locally.

This year, Main Street Wooster is using bingo as their activity for the shop hop. The bingo is made up of 24 different businesses that are located downtown, ranging from records, and jewelry or food, and flowers. You must mark five boxes of different businesses by making a purchase, (or four if you choose to use the free square) but the five must be diagonal, vertical, or horizontal. When you make your purchases, be sure to have your cashier mark your card for your bingo to count. All purchases must be bought and marked on the 19th to win a chance at a prize.

If you complete a bingo and turn it in by Monday, February 21st, then your name will be put into a drawing for a $100 downtown gift card! You can complete more than one bingo for more chances to win, but they must be on different lines. Two winners will be picked at random, and they will be contacted through phone or email.

The bingo card and instructions for the challenge are on Main Street Wooster’s website. This information can be found on the Winter Shop Hop Tab under the events option at the top of the page.

While you’re filling out your bingo card, you will especially want to visit the eight stores that will be offering discounts for the day. Graham and Burns will have 20% off all orders if you buy two specialty items. Friendtique, and its sister store Nest, will have 30% off all items. Flex Yoga Wooster will have 10% off all items in store. JK Gift Shop will be taking 25% off select Caus drinkware and giving out free Northwest stickers. Roomscapes will be having a 10% off sale for lamps and accessories. All diamond jewelry at White’s Jewelers will be 25% off. Wooster Floral and Gifts will be having up to 50% off on all items, and at Mott’s Oil and more if you buy $30 of oil and vinegar, then you can get a free oil bottle.

In the spirit of the winter season, Main Street Wooster will also be presenting an ice sculpting demonstration during the shop hop in Public Square. Erik Freay will be doing the sculpting demonstration from 1 pm to 3 pm on the square, creating a penguin out of the ice. He will also bring a pre-sculpted piece celebrating Downtown Wooster.

The Winter Shop Hop will be taking place this Saturday, February 19th and is a great way to get out of the house during these cold and dreary months. Whether you’re interested in possibly winning a gift card, or you would like to watch an ice sculpting demonstration, we hope to see you there!

However, with vaccination rates continuing to climb, it appears that we may be starting to emerge from the crisis. Just as Wooster business owners and entrepreneurs had to adapt to the pandemic world, they will need to be ready for the post-pandemic one. The following tips from Main Street Wooster should help.

1. Set or Revisit Your Strategy

Whether you are laying out your first business plan for a new idea or refining your current strategy, take some time to think about what your business will look like in the post-pandemic world. A value proposition that was profitable before or during the pandemic may not be so successful afterward. For example, many businesses that are highly reliant on smooth supply chains are still struggling. It may help to get a mentor who can act as a sounding board as you refine your plans.

2. Prepare Your Business Documents

Make sure the paperwork for your company is all in order. New entrepreneurs will be filing this for the first time. People with existing businesses may need to make some updates. January is the start of the new year, and with the new year often brings new year’s resolutions. Some people like to make resolutions, others do not, and some people like to create new goals at different points during the year. But if you have some new goals in mind or want to challenge yourself to try something new, then we have a couple of businesses to help push you out of your comfort zone.

If in the new year you are looking to experience something calm and relaxing, you might want to take a trip to The Salt and Serenity Grotto. The Salt Grotto offers massages, yoga, and salt cave sessions. In these sessions you are able to unwind in one of their two salt caves, which are surrounded by four tons of Himalayan salts. After your time in the caves, you can pick up tropical themed gifts and salts in their shop.

Sometimes you need a fresh start in the new year and changing your look can help you feel differently. A hair change can give you a new perspective on your appearance. Our handful of salons are perfect if you are looking for a new haircut, or even a new hair color. Downtown Wooster is known for its celebrations, especially for the holidays towards the end of the year, and Halloween is no exception. As a final send off for the fall spirit, the Wayne Center for the Arts will be having a Fall Festival this Saturday, October 30, 2021. The center is located on 237 South Walnut Street in downtown Wooster. The festival is going to include a variety of spooky themed activities, and will also include a lot of local artists.

A major part of this festival is the money that the center will be able to bring in. The Wayne Center for the Arts offers art classes of all types to all ages, and is a nonprofit organization. This being said, they do need funding for supplies, and exhibitions, along with other things. During the event there will be a collection of six by six panels on display. You can buy an individual one for twenty dollars; ten will go directly to future exhibitions, and ten will go to the artist of the piece.

The festivities will continue from noon to six. During these times there will be plenty of arts and crafts going on. The crafts will be for all ages and there will also be a pottery demonstration. For the kids, or for the kids at heart, there will be pumpkin painting instead of carving (in effort to possibly have less ruined costumes). There will also be mummy and other hauntingly fun crafts, and even some Halloween mask painting.

While the farmer’s artisan market and the Main Street Music nights are over for the year, the center is bringing both of those events back together for the day. Quite a list of art styles will be shown and be available to be purchased by a variety of artists. Dawn Blattel and Patti Landis are both bringing pottery, as well as some other things. Mohhammad Haddanay, Nancy Franck, and Jody Lanham will all be selling jewelry. There are also many other others who are bringing their art, such as Amanda Girvin- art prints, Elizabeth Miller- bookbinding, Emily Speelman- photos, Morgan Smith- crochet and Lake Erie art finds, and Jeane Fashempour- encaustic painter. In terms of food that will be offered, the Cookie Corner will be selling fresh bakery items during the event, and the center will also be offering hotdogs, chips, popcorn, and drinks.

On the music side of things, the festival will feature an impressive lineup of acts including Restless Root, Lila Farris, Barefoot Mccoy, and the Wayfarers. The Restless Root will go from noon to 1, Lila Farris will go from 1 to 2, Barefoot Mccoy will go from 2 to 3, and the Wayfarers will be closing things out. And as long as weather is permitting, then the event will also be having a bouncy house!

The Fall Festival is going to be a great final party for the fall season. It’s a wonderful way to support local artists, as well as possibly fund future artists by supporting the center, and what better way to do that than in costume! It’s sure to be a fun afternoon and we hope to see you there!

Downtown Wooster Homecoming

Homecoming is coming up within the next month for a lot of students, and for some, it has already come to pass. Along with the dance itself, quite a bit of routine surrounds dances for students. It’s fairly common for groups and pairs to go out to eat before school dances together. A lot of groups will even plan them in advance according to a restaurant's availability. But usually, before or after eating (and depending on how much a person trusts themselves with fancy clothing and food), those groups go take photos together. Those photos serve as a chance to show off the getting ready that was done, and as a way to preserve the moment.

In a small town we often have a very small set of options for places to take formal photos. As a community we usually tend to take photos at the college of Wooster or the O.A.R.D.C. because of the beautiful views; but we often forget downtown.

Downtown Wooster has a vast choice of photo areas for a place that is relatively small. Just this past week construction wrapped up on the revamp on the sidewalks and on the final corner of Public Square. All around the Square there are opportunities for photos. On the same side of the road that the pavilion is on, there is also a little square made of plants and benches. Across the empty area between the benches, a string of bulbed lights floats above the ground. The lights are always strung across the poles but they are truly beautiful just as the sun sets and the lights flick on. The lights are helpful in making a photo more well-lit if they are taken around sunset or dusk.

If you wanted to move past the Square, Wooster still holds a hidden talent for photo opportunities. In between a handful of buildings on East Liberty Street there are recently redone alleyways. They each look slightly different, but all of them have a couple of chairs and tables, but all of them have the stringed light bulbs that exist on the Square. The alleyways serve as a great backdrop for photos as well as being a fun place to hang out in.

Photos are usually a necessity, but food is usually just as important—if not more. While not all of the downtown restaurants accept reservations in advance, all of them are worth a try.

Muddy’s is a great restaurant if you’re looking for classics such as their choices of burgers. However, if you’re looking for something else, they do offer breakfast all day, and their chicken and waffles and pancakes are very tasty.

Breakfast is also a meal that Spoon market does very well. Spoon has a tasty selection of breakfast burritos, that are thankfully offered throughout the day. But they also have a handful of smoothies.

Basil is an excellent place for dinner. They offer a menu that is different from Muddy’s, but is equally as delicious. They feature a menu that is a blend of Chinese, South Asian, and sushi recipes. The menu offers a lot of filling options.

Another well-known restaurant and another good choice would be Broken Rocks. They are mostly known for their pasta and bread as that is what they specialize in, but they also have other dough-related food like pizza, and sandwiches.

Obviously there are plenty more options throughout downtown, but there are too many great ones to list, so this is just a handful of them. Our historic downtown has so much to offer us in the present. Events such as school dances can bring quite a large crowd into downtown, which is what has kept it in the routine of homecoming for many years, and hopefully, for many more to come.

2021 Wayne County Fair

The Wayne County Fair is a staple in most families’ households. The fair means different things to different people, but we all have our certain traditions when this time of year rolls around. While the fair didn’t stop last year, it only consisted of people who showed animals; which wasn’t quite the same. But finally, two years after our last ‘regular’ year of the fair, it has come back in full force.

Parking, of course, comes with its usual issues of forgetting which letter row your vehicle is in after a long day, but that’s to be expected. There is no shortage of food vendors as you walk through the front gate, so if you’re going to the fair for food, like most of us are, you’ll have no difficulty finding some.

Most of the classic fair rides are there except for Top Gun. But there is the Musical Express, the Zipper, Zero Gravity, and many more. Over at the Lerch’s stand by the grandstand, you can not only buy their delicious donuts, but you can also watch your donuts be fried. Not far from Lerch's, the chicken dinners are back, and while they are not unique to the fair, they are a part of the fair’s tradition.

Referencing the grandstand, the inside tunnel underneath is a great way to cool off from the hot weather we will have at the fair this year, or from potential rain. The grandstand will host many classics such as the demo derby, the tractor pull, and the high school bands, along with some performances by artists.

The art that is featured in the school buildings is always interesting to see. Each school has so many talented students in many classes, including art. As you walk through the younger to older grades you can observe how the technique and art changes into something new.

But the fair is also a huge reminder of the new and old for a lot of people in Wayne County. A lot of the current attendees of the fair used to show at one point. The smells of the barn can bring so many memories back of what the fair used to be like. And for some of these people, they have passed along their love of animals and get to go to watch their kids show.

But a lot of things have changed at the fair, even in recent years. This year there is even a special addition of a thirty-foot by sixty-foot flag that has been put in place at the fairgrounds which you can see all the way over from Route 30. You are able to get a very nice view of the new flag from the top of the ferris wheel. From the seats you can see everything from the Church of the Savior to the Lerch’s stand. So if you don’t have a fear of heights, it’s one of the best views of the fair. But what has to be the best view would be the fair during the night. From inside the fair, or driving past, the lights illuminate the fairgrounds in a colorful way that seems to remind everyone of a childlike happiness.

The fair is the one place a year where you can meet so many people. It’s the one thing that truly brings Wayne County together. You can see people that you haven’t seen in years, and people you saw in the past week. People come in for all reasons, to hang out with friends, for the food, and to show. But no matter what we all come for, it gives us a chance to be a part of the community.

As we head our way into August, we are also approaching back to school season. With this comes the need to get course books for college students, books for English and reading classes, or perhaps a book to pass time while you’re in school. Whatever the reason may be, you can get these books fairly cheaply or for no price at all.

Luckily, our very own Wayne County Public library is extremely large and offers a vast number of different genres for all ages. As it is a library obviously the books are all free, and with the sign up of a library card (providing you have a parent or guardian sign for you if you’re under 18) you can get as many as you want. Our library no longer has a set return time for how long you may keep the books, so you can keep them as long as it takes you to read them. When you finish your books, the library not only offers book pick ups, but also book drop offs just outside the doors of the building. Additionally, if you prefer to keep them on your phone instead of a physical copy, they also have e-book options on their website.

Inside the library are two whole floors filled with books. To your right of the entrance you will find the checkout area but if you walk past that you will also find the hold section. This is where your books go if you are waiting for a certain book to be brought back to the library. It goes by the last name of the hold that you placed and you can go grab it when the library notifies you that your book is there. Their first level is mostly children’s books, e-books, and their activity room, which hosts a variety of events throughout the year. But leading to the second floor are their enormous and beautiful steps, in which you can look out their windows to see a high up view of downtown Wooster. On the second floor is where their adult books and teen books are located. The teen books are actually located on what is named as the teen room. They have uniquely shaped couches that are quite comfortable, an assortment of genres, and a few computers which can be used for printing papers or other activities.

But if you’re looking for a book you can keep then you would want to go to Books In Stock. Books in Stock is a second-hand bookstore that is also two floors. It is a quiet but rather adorable looking bookshop that has an old feel to it, but it still remains in touch with newer books. Inside the store you can still smell that new book scent that all readers love without having to pay for full price books. If you’re looking for a specific genre of book then you needn’t look further, both floors are very well marked with signs above the bookcases, such as sci-fi, history, children’s books, self help, and fantasy.

Even if you’re not a reader I would encourage you to go to one or both of these places. Reading can truly be for everyone, it is all about finding your genre and tastes in books. Both of these places are a great place to explore your continued love of reading or to begin.

Long has the debate gone on between the Halloween and Christmas lovers of which holiday is the better of the two. Unfortunately, this argument will not be settled today, but the Christmas lovers have some great news to look forward to this week. The festive holiday will be upon us again before we know it, in fact this coming Sunday marks six months till Christmas! To celebrate the halfway point, Downtown Wooster is hosting a Christmas-themed event on the 24th of July. Lots of shops have plenty of discounts for the event, and many of them have Christmas themed items, and services!

If you’re looking for some festive food, then you will also want to go to the Boba Bowl and Undergrounds. The Boba Bowl will be offering an Eggnog Boba Tea for the Eggnog lovers, and a Christmas Cookie Milk tea if you don’t like Eggnog, or you don’t want boba balls in your drink. Undergrounds will be decked out in Holiday decor and on the 24th, they will be giving away three twenty dollar gift cards after Santa reads off the wishes that have been dropped in his in store mailbox throughout the month of July. The store will be selling Christmas themed macarons and Christmas cookies on the 24th, and this week leading up to it. There will also be peppermint muffins and walnut roll croissants, and if you’re looking to try either their peppermint latte or their eggnog latte, then you’ll want to get it between 3 and 7 as all lattes or mochas are one dollar off on the 24th.

The Cookie Snob will be giving away Christmas themed cookies for anyone who places a future order from them from 8 till 1, so make sure to stop by at their new location in the Freeman Building.

A Time to Craft is also a perfect place to go if you’re feeling in a creative and festive mood. There will be ornaments to make, lighted ceramic Christmas trees to paint, and other Christmas related ceramics to be painted. You can also paint different holiday signs, and smaller kids can make sock snowman and paper mache trees.

But if you’re looking for some premade items with a bit of sparkle, then you’ll want to purchase some Christmas jewelry at White Jewelers where they are selling all jewelry at 14.95!

Even the stores that won’t be Christmas themed, will still have some great discounts:

Wooster Thrifting

Usually thrift shops are associated with larger cities like Mansfield, Columbus, or Cleveland, but this isn’t actually true. Wooster has quite a handful of thrift shops; it is just a matter of knowing where to look. In fact, most of our thrift shops are located within a two minute walk of one another.

The exception to this rule is Jodi’s Closet, it is located on the other side of downtown from our other shops, and it is next to the Daily Record. Jodi’s Closet is a clothes focused thrift shop. The shop is not big enough that it is overwhelming, but also not small enough that there are minimal options. They have lots of accessories like belts and purses, and lots of them are discounted luxury brands such as Michael Kors. The store also offers a tailor who is there on select days who can alter your clothes from the store or even other stores. Depending on what they have in stock at the time, Jodi’s Closet can offer a fair amount of older, vintage clothes while also offering more new name brand things.

If you were to move back to the other side of downtown you would find Uptown Downtown Emporium, which sits in between Friendtique and RE/MAX Showcase. The store is more of a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to thrifting. While they do have clothes, they also have pieces of furniture, paintings, vintage signs, and all sorts of old knick knacks. One of their more unique items is their old vinyls, which are located up the stairs in the back of the shop. Because of the variety of vintage things in the shop, just entering the shop is an experience in it’s own. While the storefront may make the store seem small, it actually stretches back very far, which means more space for more old finds. There are so many things to look at and see that you could spend at least twenty minutes just looking around.

However, if you decide to head to the Emporium and you’re looking for more, you don’t have to head far. Not only is Friendtique right next to it, but Friendtique’s sister shop, Nest, is right around the corner. Nest is located across from Chase bank, and is currently unmarked, but if you walk into a store with lots of furniture, chairs, and beds, then you’ve found the right place. Nest is currently known as Friendtique’s host for more of their high-end thrifted home decor. They also have some outdoor patio items from time to time and they do have a discounted book section near the back of the store. So if you’re looking for a cheaper way to furnish a new apartment, Nest is the place to go. While Friendtique and Nest are sister stores, they are very different stores in a lot of ways. While Friendtique may include quite the selection of fancy tableware, and an assortment of pillows, blankets, and a few couches on their first level, their basement is entirely devoted to clothes. If you head to the back of the store, there is a small set of steps and if you turn to the right you will see a staircase leading to the women’s clothing area. The basement is quite large, and it offers a wide selection of clothes, but they easily narrow down your search by making sure the racks are well marked. In their first level they also offer a few racks of men’s clothes.

But if you’re looking for more on the kids’ size end, you’ll want to head to Kitschy Koo Boutique. The Boutique has anything that a kid from birth to around age six or seven could need. They have clothes, toys, strollers, or even baby carriers that you can strap onto your shoulders. Depending on what they have in stock at the time, the store can even offer clothes such as winter jackets up to age twelve. They also have room decorations that can be used for younger kids or nurseries. Their toys can have a lot of range, as they sell stuff for toddlers, but also for older children. So if you’re looking for a toy for your sibling, kid, niece, or nephew, the boutique would be the place to have it.

For a town more on the smaller side, we do have quite a handful of thrift shops that all have unique things to offer. So if you have a couple hours to spare and an interest in shopping then head downtown to check out one or two of these shops, or possibly even all of them!

As we are all beginning to navigate the world with a sense of normal again, many things are changing, and people, especially teenagers, are looking for fun things to do. The perfect solution for wanting to get out of the house for a small while? Coffee shops. These shops often offer things for younger kids such as sweets or beverages along with coffee, which make them the best of both worlds for all ages. Luckily, Wooster has quite a handful of coffee shops located in the downtown area.

Sure House coffee is located next door from Meatheads Union and across from City Square Steakhouse. Due to their delicious coffee, they also have a shop in Orville if you’re outside of town. But in their Wooster shop, they are known for their decor. Their rustic brick walls, and the bulbed string light hanging from the ceiling create a very aesthetically pleasing environment, which can also be a great backdrop for pictures. Their employees are all incredibly kind, and it has a very productive atmosphere, if you’re looking to get some work, or school work done. Along with their coffee, Sure House also makes a handful of baked goods, such as blueberry scones, chocolate chip cookies, and their signature cretzels; and even the pickiest of kids can’t turn down one of their chocolate cretzels.

Diagonal from Sure House is Tulipan Pastry and Coffee Shop. The layout of the shop makes you feel like you have been transported to a cozy and quiet coffee shop in the midst of downtown Paris, without ever leaving the city of Wooster. The shop has a display of quite a few delicious looking treats, with some being common, and some being European dishes that you might not have ever heard of. Tulipan offers a unique experience in their kinds of recipes, as they are brought from Hungary. While these types of desserts might deter the youngest clientele, it is a great shop for exposing young kids to desserts that they wouldn’t ordinarily get to try. Along with the tradition that they bring both metaphorically and literally to the table, their coffee options contain almost every syrup you could think of. While these options may not be listed on their main menu inside the store, don’t hesitate to ask what sort of drinks they can make for you.

A shop that is known for having a boatload of different types of drinks is Wooster Nutrition. Wooster Nutrition has a unique take on coffee and teas that is not quite like anything we have in Wooster. All of their drinks contain a bit of extra protein or extra vitamins and minerals, and occasionally, they include both. Their teas or otherwise known as their mega teas are worth their money from the sheer size of them, along with the vibrant mix of colors that the teas create. Along with the fun colors that their teas are, their selection of flavors in teas and shakes are sure to be enjoyed by anyone of any age. Wooster Nutrition’s menu is very long and extensive, but not to worry; inside their store they will happily explain the menu to you. You are also given a card to fill out your order and it lists all of the possible options. Along with their shakes and teas they also offer protein coffee in two flavors which are house brew and in mocha.

The most “hidden gem” on this list is Undergrounds because of the store's location, which is unsurprisingly, underground. It is located in the Liberty Street Market Place building, and it sits on the lowest level. It is low enough that you can’t really hear the commotion from the downtown area outside and the floor isn’t usually crowded. Because of its location it makes it a great place if you are looking for some peace and quiet. Undergrounds is also special in this list as it is the only shop that is both a cafe and coffee house. Along with their coffee, Undergrounds offers a handful of wraps, salads, and sandwiches. But if you don’t want coffee or you can’t have it, they also offer a few smoothies. In general it is a great place to spend the morning or afternoon working on a project, visiting with a friend, or just to stop by to grab a bite.

But the shop that really takes the cake for uncommon drinks in the area is the Boba Bowl. The shop has been widely well received and is quite busy at all times of the day, but this is for good reason. While the shop of course offers classic milk teas with regular tapioca balls, it also offers a handful of bubble milk coffee flavors and a vast range of fruit teas. The fruit teas are quite tasty and taste almost as if they were a mix of juices. The fruit teas can have boba pearl toppings or jelly toppings, which are both chewy; or popping pearl toppings. Popping pearl toppings can be a great option for young kids if you are worried about them choking on the boba balls, as they ‘pop’ open to release a flavor when they enter your mouth. While you might feel hesitant to try something new, the Boba Bowl is certainly good enough to be worth a try.

All five places make some really great drinks and have wonderful workers that always seem to make your day. These shops are also a great way to support your local businesses, which is important to the community. So the next time one of your siblings, kids, or friends says that they’re bored, maybe head out to your closest downtown coffee shop, and try something new. Regardless of if you are 17, 8, 50, or 80 they are a sure way to have a great afternoon.

Main Street Music - Summer Series

Oftentimes we spend our brutal winters inside as we wish for summer weather, but when summer comes and goes we often feel let down or disappointed. Whether it be that you feel like you should’ve hung out with your friends more or you didn’t take advantage of the weather as much as you hoped, it’s quite common to feel this way for people, especially high school students. Summer seems to go by so quickly, and with so many students being busy with work or other things it can feel impossible to find the time. But when you are able to find the time to plan activities, it can also be difficult to find the money to be able to do those things. So where is the middle ground that is both fun yet inexpensive, and what can also interest people of all ages? The answer is something that almost every human being enjoys. Music.

Luckily, Wooster has all sorts of musical stylings to offer. During this summer, Main Street Wooster has live music from six to eight p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays. The musicians play on the square and their music ranges from jazz, to rock mixed with blues, and even some tropical tunes. This past week I was even lucky enough to be able to speak with one of the musicians in the jazz band named Standard Time Jazz.

Eric Fairhurst is a jack of all trades as he can play all types of saxophones, the flute, and the clarinet. He even goes on to say that it is unlike him to not have at least two to three instruments that he brings to a show. The name Standard Time Jazz speaks for itself as to what genre of music the group plays, but they do occasionally play some blues music. Eric believes that he most likely got into music and specifically jazz music because it was the genre that he grew up listening to.

While most people nowadays might not have a strong connection with jazz, Eric knows that most people quickly form a positive bond with live music of any kind. To quote his wise words, “The nature of live music draws them in. It's improvised, it's fluid, and they hold on because they want to know how the story of the music ends.” Eric certainly understands the complexities, but also the simple things in music; he explains that his favorite part of performing is “to play a beautiful melody with my friends."

During my time learning about what Wooster’s musicians have to offer, I also got to speak with the solo act of Island Cocktail Entertainment. Craig Butdorf started off playing the trombone in high school, and then learned bass guitar before eventually learning how to play piano. But where he really found his passion was on the steel drums, which is the instrument he currently plays. These drums are actually very unique. Their full name is the double second steel drums, and they produce a very tropical sound. Craig believes that their sound is a part of what draws people into his music as they don’t look or sound like anything people have ever heard or seen. He mostly sticks to playing tropical music, and plays some Jimmy Buffett songs, as well as doing some singing.

While attempting to talk and play does make him worry that he will mess up, Craig’s favorite part about performing is getting to see people’s expressions and excitement as they listen to his music. He also expressed his love for getting to play in the atmosphere of downtown Wooster, and he talked highly of his other performers by simply stating that “there’s a lot of talent in Wooster.”

As a whole, there are a lot of great musicians in Wooster that perform purely for the enjoyment of their listeners, though they do appreciate the occasional tip. With so many different music acts that are listed, you are sure to find something that you like. As Craig Butdorf said, “Come on down there’s a lot for everybody, and you’d be surprised how much fun you’d have. So come on down, and visit. And it’s free.”

The Main Street Wooster Farmers' Market

Summer break is quickly approaching for the students and teachers of Wayne county, and along with this, the weather is finally getting warmer. Granted, as all Ohioans know, we can’t get used to the weather on a daily basis; but we are approaching the time of year where we usually have more nice days than dreary ones. With the beginning of summer on its way, the farmer’s market also begins. The market takes place in downtown Wooster and runs on Saturday until mid-October.

The market is a great way to kickstart your summer weekend. You can shop there from 8:00 a.m. till noon. It takes place on Market street in between the intersections of North street and Liberty street. Since it is right in the center of downtown, there is plenty of parking, so there’s no worry of not finding a spot; or potentially having to parallel park if you learned a not so fun lesson on maneuverability instead. Though most people have heard of a farmer’s market, not many young adults or teens have attended one, but that doesn’t mean that kids wouldn’t have fun. There is a feeling of exploration and experiencing new things.

Farmer’s markets are typically thought of as only selling fruits and vegetables, but the Wooster market actually has much more to offer. There was a collection of flowers, baked treats, bread, and even tea bags. And if that doesn’t quite satisfy your need for trying new things, a large number of shops open early for the farmer’s market; including beverage shops. So if you’re planning on attending the market, taking a quick walk off of Liberty Street could get you a delicious coffee to start your morning, or to cool you down later in the day.

Along with their various products that you can buy, the market even offers live music. The musician or musicians are located under the pavilion, and they are all incredibly talented, which offers a rather unique experience that you wouldn’t usually expect at a market. The pavilion is shady and cool with plenty of seating, and it is a great way to cool off from the summer heat and rest your feet for a moment.

The market also allows you to explore downtown in a more calm and relaxed atmosphere in comparison to Saturday nights. With minimal crowds in the early mornings, the market can be a great way to check out what shops in Wooster have to offer without being in a fast paced and loud environment. The markets also make supporting local businesses more convenient, you don’t have to try to find where the shops are located because the market allows for a vast majority of them to be contained in the same space.

It is a fun summertime activity that can be a blast for the whole family. Overall the market is a great experience, and is a great way to hang out with friends, or have some alone time while shopping. No matter who it’s with, with so much to do, see, and hear, you’re sure to have a good time.
