Embrace the Dog Days of Summer

The dog days of summer are upon us. While the term “dog days” technically refers to the period of time when the star Sirius–known as the “dog star” and part of the constellation Canis Major, or “the Greater Dog”–aligns with the sun, most of us think of it as a reference to the heat: essentially, it’s so hot outside that even dogs don’t have the energy to do anything. While the July and August heat can be oppressive, Wooster offers a number of opportunities for you– and your best friend–to beat the heat together.
If you want to spend some quality time outdoors and help your pup make some new pals, Troutman Vineyards and Winery has partnered with PAWS to host Yappy Hours on the second Friday of every month from May to October. The $10 admission fee includes a drink for you and a treat for your dog, plus an entry to win a prize. For those not planning to drink, admission is $5. The funds PAWS raises at Yappy Hour go toward supporting shelter dogs, so you’re not only having a good night out with your best bud–you’re also helping dogs in need!
Another way to have a great time with your canine companion this summer is to enjoy some frozen treats together! If your dog loves going through the drive-thru for a pup cone, consider making your own frozen dog treats–your dog will love them, and you’ll feel great knowing that the ingredients are nutritious. Stop by Local Roots Market & Café and grab fresh, locally sourced berries, melons, and carrots for a healthy treat you and your pup can share. If your pooch loves to help you shop, take a trip to the Farmers’ Market together. The Farmers’ Market runs from 8 am to noon on Saturdays, and polite canine shoppers are always welcome!
If you don’t have a dog, you can still celebrate the dog days of summer. Volunteering at Wayne County Humane Society is a fantastic way to get involved in the community and do some good for our furry friends. The Humane Society is always looking for volunteers. Even if dogs aren’t your thing, there are opportunities to support the organization through fundraising as well as clerical and maintenance work. And if you love animals, volunteering to do animal care is always a fulfilling experience. Who knows–you could get lucky and meet your new best friend!
It can be tempting to spend the dog days of summer basking in the breeze of your air conditioner, but spending quality time with your pup and making new memories together is more rewarding. In addition to Wooster’s beautiful parks and walkable neighborhoods, we’re lucky to have so many outside-the-box ways to spend time with our four-legged friends.
